tips & tricks
Ensure smooth and invisible drywall seams by using joint tape and multiple layers of joint compound. Apply a thin layer of joint compound over the seam, embed the tape into the compound, and smooth it out. Apply two to three more layers of compound, feathering the edges each time, and sand lightly between layers until the seam is seamless and smooth.
Hang heavy objects on drywall by using wall anchors or toggle bolts rated for the weight of the item. Locate a stud with a stud finder and anchor into it whenever possible for maximum support. If anchoring into drywall only, select an anchor that expands behind the wall for a secure hold, and always follow the manufacturer’s weight limits and installation instructions.
Properly insulate interior walls by choosing the right type of insulation, such as fiberglass batts, foam board, or blown-in insulation. Ensure the insulation fits snugly between the studs without compressing it. Use a vapor barrier if required in your climate to prevent moisture buildup. Properly insulating walls helps with soundproofing and energy efficiency.
Repair a hole in drywall by first cleaning the area around the hole. For small holes, use a pre-made patch kit or fill the hole with spackle or joint compound. For larger holes, cut out a square around the hole and insert a new piece of drywall, securing it with screws. Apply joint tape around the edges, cover with joint compound, sand smooth, and repaint.
Prevent mold and mildew on walls by controlling moisture levels in your home. Use a dehumidifier in damp areas and ensure proper ventilation in high-humidity rooms like bathrooms and kitchens. Repair any leaks promptly and consider using mold-resistant drywall and paint in areas prone to moisture. Regularly inspect and clean areas that are susceptible to mold growth.
