Ensure a level subfloor by first cleaning it thoroughly to remove any debris. Use a long level to check for high or low spots, and fill any depressions with a self-leveling compound. Sand down any high areas, and make sure the entire surface is smooth and even before laying your tiles to prevent cracking and ensure a professional finish.

Cut tiles without breaking them by using a quality tile cutter or a wet saw with a diamond blade. Score the tile lightly first, then apply even pressure to snap it along the score line. For intricate cuts, use a wet saw to achieve smooth, precise edges. Always wear safety goggles and gloves to protect yourself from sharp edges and flying debris.

Choose the right grout by considering the width of your tile joints and the type of tile you’re using. For narrow joints (1/8 inch or less), use unsanded grout to prevent cracking. For wider joints, use sanded grout for added strength. Consider using epoxy grout for areas exposed to moisture, as it’s more resistant to stains and mildew than traditional cement-based grouts.

Prevent lippage, which is the uneven height between adjacent tiles, by using a tile leveling system during installation. Spread the thin-set evenly, place the tiles, and use the leveling clips and wedges to hold them in place. Allow the thin-set to dry completely before removing the clips to ensure a smooth, even surface.

Maintain and protect your new tile floor by sealing the grout lines to prevent stains and moisture penetration. Clean the tiles regularly with a mild detergent and avoid using abrasive cleaners that can damage the surface. Place mats at entryways to catch dirt and debris, and use felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches and damage.
